Insurance Requirements for NATA Clinic Participation
Formation Committee
September 2025
Pilots flying as PIC at NATA Clinics must upload and have a Certificate of Insurance (COI) approved in advance by HQ for each aircraft they intend to fly. PDF** versions of COIs must be uploaded, not e-mailed, to their own My Formation Documents. Since it can take several days for an acceptable document to be received and approved it is recommended that, to avoid the disappointment of not being permitted to fly, this task not be left until the last minute. If pilots are sharing or borrowing an aircraft, each pilot intending to fly it at a clinic must have an individual copy of the COI on file in their own My Formation Documents file. Detailed instructions are available below or you may click here for a PDF version
All aircraft flown at a NATA clinic must be covered by liability insurance meeting the requirements below and documented in a Certificate of Insurance (COI) that accurately reflects the terms of the policy and endorsements.
A COI is a special form you get from your insurance company, not a copy of your insurance policy, Coverage Identification Page, or a Proof of Insurance; and it must contain all the following items and language. Please share this list with your agent.
- Additional Insured: Your COI must identify "North American Trainer Association (NATA), its officers, directors, and clinic staff, 2059 Airport Road, Elkhart, IN 46514" as Additional Insured, and this coverage must be provided by an appropriate endorsement to your policy (next bullet).
- Policy Endorsement: Your Additional Insured endorsement must be appropriate for “Fly in” aviation events -- not the endorsement typically used to provide additional insured coverage for CFIs or flight schools ("flight instruction").
- Approved Pilots: If the PIC registrant is not a Named Insured on the policy or the Named Insured is an LLC or other corporate entity, the COI must identify the registrant as an Approved Pilot.
- Unacceptable Restrictions: 1) "Excess" or "secondary" coverage, 2) Limiting coverage to Instruction or Training (see Policy Endorsement, above), 3) Any coverage limitations for formation flying are subject to review.
- Effective Dates: Coverage for at least the duration of the clinic, including travel to and from
- Aircraft Identification: Aircraft type and registration number
- Liability coverage: Not less than $1,000,000 each occurrence / $100,000 each passenger
COIs not containing these provisions will be rejected, and clinic participation will be denied until remedied. Since it can take several days to obtain a valid COI, we suggest you request yours well in advance of any clinic you plan to attend.
**PDF format only. If your agent did not send a PDF document and you do not have access to a scanner, you can

Once a COI has been uploaded and accepted it may be used for multiple clinics occurring during its effective term (unless a clinic has special requirements listed on the Event Registration page - not common). The status of uploaded COIs may be checked by clicking
My Formation Documents or visiting

Formation+ menu.
